Physical Training (PT) & Work-Walking

I live near the Air Force Academy.

And a couple of years ago I was meeting a friend of a friend for a beer. He was just wrapping up a work meeting.

What struck me about the three Academy Professors was this: (A.) They were fit, and (B.) They were drinking beer.

So I asked them, “How are you guys so fit?”

They said, “We have daily PT built into our work day–it is required.”

Physical Training was required . . . daily!

So I’ve been trying it since May–building daily cardio walking and a bit of strength training into my schedule. So far, I have more energy and less anxiety. I plan to make the changes permanent.

And I have also discovered the benefit of the work-walk.

I can plan and focus better while walking.

On Monday mornings, I start my work day with a three-mile walk. During each mile I assign a task–I think about that item for a mile (writing down notes or sending myself reminders as needed); and when the mile is up, I switch to the next task. Also, thinking about just one item per mile gives me more time to reflect–decisions aren’t rushed and problem solving is less taxing.

Recently I did some research on my personal findings, and studies back up what I have found to be true.

It isn’t often that a guy walks into a bar and comes out the better for it.
