No Silver Bullets, Please

This Week’s Good Work Insight
Big problems feel like monsters. They rob you of your sleep. They make you jumpy . . .
If you have big problems at work (and most people do), then you have another problem: People want to sell you Silver Bullets.
Please–pretty please–pause before you buy (sleep on it, ask for counsel, check references, read reviews).
Unless there is a miracle (read C.S. Lewis’s essay “Miracles” if you haven’t), you have the laws of change, growth, and resolution.
The recipe of time, good intentions, a good plan, courage, and a good team solve problems (vanquish monsters).
If your problem is an individual problem, then growth is counted in time. Habits, virtues, change–they all take weeks and months and years.
I love La Sagrada Familia in Barcelona. It has been under construction for 144 years. Its beauty is the overcoming of a million problems.
The cardinal virtues are better than silver bullets: prudence (right thing, right time, right way), justice (the good), fortitude (giddy up), and temperance (whoah).
Bring them to bear on your monsters.
