Apprenticing Under Old Fezziwig

I knew the story from the movie –The Muppet Christmas Carol. But I had never read the book (or even listened to the audiobook).

Two years ago I listened to it for the first time (read by Hugh Grant). And last year we listened to it as a family while driving into the mountains to cut down our Christmas tree. This week we will start to read it around the fire.

Aristotle said we work so that we might have leisure. Pieper said we work so that we might have liturgy.

Old Fezziwig–one of Ebenezer Scrooge’s early employers–worked hard, cared for his clients and his people, and was a man of good cheer–of dance and festivity.

Many people have mastered hard work. So as we approach Advent and the New Year looking for opportunities to grow–why not make a change before we are supposed to?

Why not apprentice under Old Fezziwg? Or the Scrooge of Christmas Morning?

Charles Dickens writes that “Marley was as dead as a doornail.” And he writes this so that we may start with the end in mind from the beginning.

A Christmas Carol is a story that has a lot to do with work. And it is a wild invitation.
